Zero-VOC painting, explained without the marketing.
Boulder asks harder questions about what goes on its walls than anywhere else we work. Good. Here are real answers.
- Zero-VOC and low-VOC products on any interior project
- Honest discussion of where durability trade-offs still exist
- Documentation of product VOC content for green-build records
- Responsible handling of leftover material and washout

Boulder CO Painters offers zero-VOC and low-VOC painting throughout Boulder County. Volatile organic compounds are the solvents that evaporate as a coating cures, and they produce the odor associated with fresh paint. Colorado tightened VOC limits on architectural coatings in 2020, so most quality interior lines sold here are already low-VOC by regulation, and true zero-VOC bases are widely available. Tinting can reintroduce a small amount of VOC content, which is why honest explanation matters more than a label.
What the term actually measures
VOC content is measured in grams per liter under a defined test method, and it refers to the base paint in the can. Three things follow from that, and all three get glossed over in marketing.
- Zero-VOC does not mean zero chemicals. It means the volatile organic compound content falls below a threshold. Paint is still a manufactured product.
- Zero-VOC does not mean zero odor. Odor and VOC content are related but not identical. Some low-odor products are not especially low-VOC, and some zero-VOC products still smell during application.
- Colorant adds VOCs back. A zero-VOC base tinted to a deep saturated color is no longer zero-VOC. How much depends on the colorant system and the depth of color.
Has the durability gap closed?
Largely, yes, and that is a genuine change from fifteen years ago. Premium low-VOC interior lines today perform comparably to conventional products in washability, coverage and durability. If someone tells you low-VOC paint will not hold up on your walls, they are working from outdated information.
Where real trade-offs still exist is in specialty coatings. Some cabinet finishes, industrial maintenance products and high-performance exterior systems have fewer low-VOC options, or the low-VOC version cures more slowly. We will tell you which category your project falls into rather than promising there is never a cost.
Who asks for this, and why
| Situation | What matters most |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy or a new baby | Zero-VOC base, unsaturated colors, strong ventilation, and finishing well before the room is occupied |
| Asthma or chemical sensitivity | Odor profile matters as much as VOC number. We can get product data sheets in advance |
| Home office or studio | Rooms occupied all day benefit most from low-odor products and a realistic cure schedule |
| LEED or green-build project | Documented VOC content per product for your project records |
| Pets in the house | Scheduling and ventilation planning so animals are not in a freshly coated room |
What happens to the leftovers
Unused paint and washout are handled responsibly, not poured down a drain or left in your garage indefinitely. Colorado operates a paint stewardship program with drop-off sites for leftover architectural paint, and we use it. Touch-up quantities stay with you, labeled with the room and the formula.

Get a written estimate
Send photos and we will price it without a visit where we can. Peeling, water damage or a landmark property gets a walkthrough first.
Every estimate names the surfaces, the preparation steps, the exact product line and sheen, the coat count, the schedule and the warranty. Nothing vague.
