Before it becomes carpentry

Deck and fence staining, on the cycle altitude demands.

High-altitude sun takes wood apart faster than most homeowners expect. Sealing on schedule is maintenance. Waiting turns it into a lumber bill.

  • Decks, fences, railings, pergolas, log and timber siding
  • Cleaned and brightened so stain penetrates rather than sits
  • Cedar, redwood, pine and pressure-treated lumber
  • Written 5-year workmanship warranty

Boulder CO Painters stains decks, fences, railings, pergolas and log or timber siding across Boulder County. Wood is cleaned, brightened, sanded where the grain has raised, and sealed with stains chosen for high-altitude ultraviolet exposure and freeze-thaw cycling. Cedar and heavy timber are common on Boulder's foothills-adjacent and mountain properties, and both need penetrating stain systems rather than film-forming paint.

The water test

You do not need a professional to tell you when your deck needs attention. Pour a cup of water on it. If it beads and sits, the seal is intact. If it soaks in and darkens the board, the wood is drinking every storm and snowmelt that lands on it, and the clock is running.

At Boulder's elevation, and especially on the west-facing decks around Chautauqua, Table Mesa and anything up a canyon, that moment arrives sooner than homeowners expect. A deck that held up for four years at sea level may need attention in two here.

Why stain and not paint

Paint forms a film on top of the wood. On a horizontal surface that takes standing water, snow load and foot traffic, that film eventually fails, and when it does it peels in sheets and has to be stripped entirely. Stain penetrates into the wood instead. When it wears, it wears away rather than lifting, which means the next maintenance cycle is a clean and recoat rather than a removal project.

This is why we will generally talk you out of painting a deck surface even when you ask for it.

Choosing a transparency

TypeShows grainLastsBest for
TransparentFullyShortest cycleNew or beautiful wood you want to show off
Semi-transparentMostlyMiddleMost Boulder decks. The practical default
Semi-solidTexture onlyLongerOlder wood with color variation to even out
SolidNoLongest appearanceFences and weathered wood. Hardest to reverse later

Log and heavy timber

Above town toward Nederland, and on the timber-framed homes along the foothills, the work changes character. Log surfaces need penetrating stain plus attention to checking, which are the cracks that open as logs dry, and to chinking where it exists. Those cracks collect water, and a stain job that ignores them is cosmetic only. We address them as part of the scope.

Questions

Deck and fence staining questions from Boulder homeowners

How often should a deck be stained in Boulder?
Test with water rather than a calendar. When it stops beading and starts soaking in, it is time. South and west-facing decks, and anything at elevation or up a canyon, reach that point sooner than shaded city yards.
Why did my last stain peel off in sheets?
Almost always a film-forming product used on a horizontal surface, stain applied over damp wood, or stain applied over a previously sealed surface it could not penetrate. All three trap moisture underneath.
Should I paint my deck instead?
We would advise against it on the walking surface. Paint forms a film that eventually peels and has to be stripped. Stain penetrates and wears away gradually, which makes every future maintenance cycle far simpler.
Do you work on log homes?
Yes. Log and heavy-timber surfaces need penetrating stain systems, attention to checking and chinking, and products rated for the ultraviolet load at elevation. The work is different from siding and the estimate reflects it.
Can a brand-new deck be stained right away?
Sometimes. New pressure-treated lumber often needs to dry first, and the wait depends on the lumber and the weather. We check moisture content and follow the product's guidance rather than guessing.
What about boards that are already damaged?
We flag loose boards, popped fasteners and rot during the estimate. Minor fixes are handled within the project, and larger repairs are quoted separately so you can decide.

Get a written estimate

Send photos and we will price it without a visit where we can. Peeling, water damage or a landmark property gets a walkthrough first.

Every estimate names the surfaces, the preparation steps, the exact product line and sheen, the coat count, the schedule and the warranty. Nothing vague.
