Estimating a painting project in Boulder, Colorado

Published 2026 Front Range cost data puts exterior house painting at roughly $1.55 to $4.10 per square foot of paintable surface and interior painting at about $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot. Kitchen cabinet refinishing typically runs $2,000 to $8,000 versus $15,000 to $30,000 or more for replacement. In Boulder, the condition of the existing coating, trim detail on older homes, hillside access and pre-1978 lead-safe requirements move the final number more than floor area does.

What the published data says

Start with real numbers rather than a guess. Published 2026 Front Range cost data puts exterior house painting at roughly $1.55 to $4.10 per square foot of paintable surface, and interior painting at about $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot. Kitchen cabinet refinishing generally runs $2,000 to $8,000, against $15,000 to $30,000 or more to replace the same cabinetry.

Those are wide ranges for a reason. The spread is not greed, it is condition.

What actually moves your number

FactorEffectWhy
Condition of the existing coatingLargest single factorSound paint needs a wash. Failing paint needs scraping, sanding, priming, and sometimes carpentry.
Trim and detailVery large on older homesA Victorian facade can take longer than a whole modern elevation of the same square footage.
Access and heightSignificantHillside lots, three-story walls and tight canyon sites need staging, and staging is time.
Pre-1978 constructionAdds real costFederally required lead-safe containment, work practices and cleanup verification.
Landmarks or HOA reviewAdds schedule, some costSamples, submissions and waiting for a decision before a crew is booked.
Color change severityModerateDark to light, or a deep saturated color, can mean an extra coat.
Product gradeModerate up front, large over timeA premium exterior line costs more per gallon and buys years at this altitude.

The arithmetic nobody shows you

Imagine two bids on the same house. One is $6,000 and skips the wash, the scrape and the primer. One is $9,500 and does all three.

The cheap job looks identical for about eighteen months. Then it starts lifting, because nothing was holding it to the substrate. Now the next painter has to remove the failed coating before doing the work properly, which costs more than painting bare siding would have. You have paid $6,000, plus removal, plus $9,500. The $3,500 you saved cost you roughly $8,000.

This is the entire argument for preparation, and it is why our estimates itemize it instead of writing "prep as needed."

Where you can legitimately save

  • Book interiors in the off-season. October through April has open calendar and no weather risk.
  • Do the whole exterior at once. Mobilization, staging and setup are charged once instead of twice.
  • Clear the rooms yourself. Furniture and wall art removed before we arrive is time you are not paying for.
  • Fix the sprinklers first. If spray is hitting the bottom courses, that is a $40 adjustment preventing a recurring failure.
  • Coordinate with neighbors. Two houses on one street in one trip lowers both prices.
  • Prioritize elevations. If budget is tight, south and west are failing first. Do those, plan the rest.
Questions

Cost questions

How much to paint a 2,000 square foot house in Boulder?
Using published 2026 Front Range exterior data of roughly $1.55 to $4.10 per square foot of paintable surface, most homes that size land in a broad four-figure range. Paintable surface is not the same as floor area, which is why the estimate is measured on the actual building.
Why is one bid half the price of another?
Almost always four things: the preparation included, the exact product specified, the coat count, and the warranty. Ask all four bidders those questions in writing and the gap usually explains itself.
Is painting more expensive in Boulder than Denver?
Often somewhat, for real reasons: a higher share of pre-1978 homes requiring lead-safe practices, historic district review, hillside access, and altitude exposure that justifies higher-grade coatings.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Written estimates are free, by photo or in person.
When do I pay?
A deposit reserves your dates and the balance is due at completion, after you have walked the work and signed off. The terms are printed on the estimate.
Does the October discount stack with anything?
The 25% off is applied to labor on projects booked by October 31, 2026. Paint and materials are not included in the discount.

Get a written estimate

Send photos and we will price it without a visit where we can. Peeling, water damage or a landmark property gets a walkthrough first.

Every estimate names the surfaces, the preparation steps, the exact product line and sheen, the coat count, the schedule and the warranty. Nothing vague.
