Boulder CO Painters refinishes kitchen cabinets throughout Boulder County. Cabinets are degreased, scuff-sanded, primed with a bonding primer made for slick factory finishes and sprayed with a cabinet-grade topcoat. Doors and drawer fronts are finished in a controlled area while boxes are completed in place under containment. Published Front Range data puts professional cabinet refinishing at roughly $2,000 to $8,000 per kitchen against $15,000 to $30,000 or more for replacement.

The honest test for whether this works

Refinishing is the right call when the cabinetry is structurally sound and the layout works. It is the wrong call when it is not, and we will tell you which you have before taking the job.

Why cheap cabinet jobs chip

Nearly every failed cabinet paint job we are called to fix skipped one of four steps. Degreasing, because kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking residue that no paint will bond through. Scuff sanding, because factory finishes are deliberately slick. Bonding primer, because standard primer is not formulated to grip that surface. Or the painter used wall paint instead of a cabinet-grade product, which never cures hard enough to survive fingernails and cabinet doors closing.

Done correctly the finish is genuinely durable. Done quickly it chips at the edges within a year, and correcting it costs more than doing it right would have.

What the week looks like

  1. Day one: doors and drawer fronts removed, labeled and taken to the spray area. Hardware bagged and tracked.
  2. Day one to two: boxes degreased, sanded and masked. Containment goes up so the rest of the house stays clean.
  3. Day two to three: bonding primer on everything, then sanding between coats.
  4. Day three to four: finish coats sprayed. Cure time between coats is what sets the schedule, not labor.
  5. Day four to five: doors rehung, hardware reinstalled, adjustments made, walkthrough.

Oak grain: fill it or show it

Boulder has a lot of oak cabinetry from the 1980s and 90s. Oak has open, pronounced grain, and paint does not hide it. You have two legitimate options: leave the grain visible, which reads as painted wood and keeps some character, or fill it for a smooth modern slab look, which adds labor. Neither is wrong. We will show you both before you choose.

Questions

Cabinet refinishing questions from Boulder homeowners

How much does cabinet refinishing cost in Boulder?
Published Front Range data puts professional cabinet refinishing at roughly $2,000 to $8,000 for a typical kitchen. The number is driven by door and drawer-front count, whether boxes are included, and the condition of the existing finish.
Is refinishing really cheaper than new cabinets?
Substantially. Replacement in the Boulder and Denver market commonly starts around $15,000 and climbs well past $30,000 for custom work, while refinishing runs a fraction of that whenever the boxes are solid.
Can honey oak cabinets be painted white?
Yes, and it is the most requested cabinet project we get. The real question is whether you want the oak grain to show through or be filled for a smooth finish. We will show you samples of both on your own doors.
How long is my kitchen out of service?
Most kitchens take three to five days on site. Cure time between coats drives the schedule. Doors are finished off-site while boxes are completed in place, so the disruption is shorter than people expect.
Will the finish chip?
Not when the process is correct. Chipping traces back to skipped degreasing, no scuff sanding, missing bonding primer, or wall paint used where a cabinet-grade coating belongs.
Can you fix a cabinet job someone else did badly?
Usually. We assess whether the existing coating can be sanded and recoated or has to come off entirely, then rebuild the finish properly. Tell us what happened and we will be straight about the options.
